The selection of the right primer is as important as the choice for the optimal top coat. A primer system on its own can provide excellent corrosion protection, Skydrol resistance, and add durability to the part that is being finished. As a base, primers will help enhance the adhesion of the selected topcoat. Primers come in a number of basic chemistries including epoxy polyamides and alkyd, as well as VOC and water based systems. The addition of metals in the primer, like lead, zinc and chrome will enhance the paint’s corrosion protection. In today’s environmentally friendly arena, there are newer systems that do not use heavy metals but still provide excellent performance.
